wedding bands
Question:
We are in the process of getting our wedding bands and have visited a few places. I thought I knew about gold rating and such but we went to a few places (within spitting distance of each other) and we ended up getting very different rates for the same size (width and finger), gold quality, and style (comfort fit versus whatever other term they use). The prices were even a factor of two higher in one case. So, given this, I have come to question some things. Like, is there such a thing as different gold quality once you specify 18K yellow gold? One store talked about a specific compression that they use to make their ring more durable, for example. How do you know about the quality then? Maybe, an easier response to me would be some recommendations of places in the Bay Area, preferably around Palo Alto. We are interested on plain simple bands with option on size (width) and style. Thanks for any pointers, edgar —

As silly as this is gonna sound, if you’re interested in plain bands, I would look someplace like Best. While 18k gold is nice and all, it’s also a lot softer than 12k (which is softer than 10k, etc.), and for a ring you’re going to wear everyday for the rest of your life you probably want something a bit harder. We got my engagement ring at a nice jeweler in Los Altos… but then while we were in Ohio over Xmas we went to a department store (kinda like Best) and for not much money got a nice wedding set. They’re not completely plain, but stores like that tend to carry a variety of plain and decorated bands, and as long as you’re not looking for something very fancy, I think it’s probably the most inexpensive way to go. (Of course their "fancy" rings are cheesy looking, but for a plain band, no one is ever gonna look at it and say "Geez, that looks like you bought it at Service Merchandise!") ;) My (frugal) $.02.
