If I’m not mistaken, the trasporter series is a step up from the VX.

Whenever I see a really thin, compact power amp for bass, I am suspicious of its ability to handle the thermal loads that are encountered with normal use. I wonder if the sensor that shuts it down was defective? Or if it was "out of adjustment" if there was one. I doubt the latter. Most of those are fixed at a certain temperature. Still, the sensors have been known to be defective from time to time. My VX410 cost me $300. I forget if I paid shipping or not. Probably not. I was going to sell it since I have since obtained some beefier enclosures that I know will not burp or fart during normal high volume use. Then I turn around and order an Agile V2 six string bass from Rondo the other day when the price dipped to $199 and some change. I’ve been wanting an active six string, but I don’t think I’ll be able to justify an expensive one. Hence the Agile. Well, now I just might need that Hartke to handle the upper end of the register. It’s not eating anything and it won’t be worth any less five years from now, so I guess I’ll hold on to it. The VX410 has a power rating of 400 watts RMS. I suppose they rate the crossover and tweeter sufficiently to absorb the rest of the power. I suppose… I like Ampeg equipment myself. Ed Cregger

My 3500 head had a tendacy just quit abrubtly – no sound what so ever for about 2 or 3 minutes. I beleive it was do to in adiquate cooling. I had to remove it from my rack and keep an additional fan on it, but this only worked when the room temp was below 80f. Even with the fan on it, it failed a couple of times. This was operating with a 4 ohm load. The speakers were just garbage in general – I found that individually the 10s were only rated for 75 watts each. The 15 was rated for 300 watts peak. All of them had a tendancy to fart easily. Now granted my band plays pretty loud – if you don’t need the volume they are probably fine. I replace the 3500 with an svt-3 and built my own cabs and loaded them with eminence delta 10s and a kappa 15lf. Never had another problem with overheating – or undesirable pops from my speakers.

Aguilar uses custom Eminence – I ordered a replacement from the Aguilar web site once, and it had an eminence custom order sheet in the box when I received it – obviously an oversight. Aguilar sells its own replacement speakers via its web site, and they are reasonably priced and special tuned for your cabinet. I’d recommend them. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->John .. would you be able to recommend a driver replacement for the Aguilar >GS112 cab too?It is a 1 one twleve bass cab. John, I know that Epifani uses Eminence. They say they’re custom-built, but no matter how "custom" they are, they won’t vary drastically from the stock designs. Don’t know about Aguilar.

I’ve done it! And it wasn’t off the back of a truck either! So I know it CAN happen! All it takes is enough misalignment until the voice coil starts to rub…then doom soon follows. Benj — Due to SPAM innundation above address is turned off!

For those Hartke boxes, I’d strongly suggest the Eminence Kappa Pro 15 and the Eminence BP-102. The 10" driver is not super efficient, but will perform with a broad frequency response in that box. The Kappa Pro 15 will also give the best lows in that Hartke cab, since it has a fairly low resonant frequency, and a low Vas factor, meaning it will give good low end in a fairly compact cab. Fane and RCF also make premium drivers, and Carvin also sells OEM drivers (which I think are Eminence). Look for a low Fs (resonant frequency), a low Vas (how well it produces lows in a compact box) and reasonable efficiency (95dB or higher if you can). A few dB extra efficiency will perform like 100s of extra watts of amplifier power in actual use.

Yeah, Eminence and Celestion make some good stuff ($$$), Peavey makes some good buys as well if you want to save some cash. Also consider the speakers in the Carvin catalog. Decent prices. I’d say get a cast frame speaker for the 15" if possible (About $110) from Carvin. The stamped basket speakers will sound as good UNTIL you happen to have an accident and the cab takes a small drop. The weight of the magnet (which you want big and heavy for efficiency) may bend a stamped basket in a fall. That pretty much trashes the speaker. The 10" ones are lighter and won’t be quite as prone to damage, but if you can afford it, I’d get the cast frames for those as well. OF course, Peavey or Carvin speakers won’t have the tone of the big bux cabs but there is a REASON they cost big bux! Just price some of those drivers. And let me say one more thing about drivers. I have a Fender BXR 200. It came with the Fender 15" Speaker. I also happened to have a similar speaker which is a "hollywood" brand. It’s a West Coast thing designed for sound sytems and VERY well made with HUGE magnet. So I started swapping speakers just for fun. What I found was that the Fender speaker had a lot of distortion in it while the other speaker had a very pure "hi fi" kind of tone. Now you might think that more pure speaker would always sound better. But that was NOT the case! What I found was that the tone you got with a certain speaker very much depended upon the bass you put through it! For example my Ken Smith just came to life on Fender driver, but sounded thin and weak with the "hi fi" driver. Just the opposite was true for my Modulus. The distortion of the Fender Speaker gave it a really muddy tone, while the sound system driver, made it ring like a bell! I guess the point I’m making here is that choosing a brand of speaker for bass cabs has a great deal to do with tone and ALSO depends on the bass you intend to play through that cab. I guess this is why cab building is still an "art". Benj — Due to SPAM innundation above address is turned off!

Oh, Ripley, I am so happy/sad/relieved/worried for you! I can’t imagine what you’ve been going through nor how it is for you now. I only know that I am very close to my mom and I would want to take care of her as long as necessary, and then certainly would want the best care for her when she was beyond my help. ((((((((((((Ripley))))))))))))))) Gawd, it sounds like you’re going thru hell right now! I’m not going to stick up for the place she’s at except to say that the bruises could be the result of a medicine she’s taking (coumadin, etc)…but I’d be totally pissed off if this were MY mother, too. I would be fuming and want a few answers myself. As for the incontinence pads, if you’re getting the generic brands, they usually are ‘crap’ but the only way you can find out is to try different kinds. Maybe the caregivers meant that it wasn’t the best choice is all. (I hope Medicaid is covering the COST for you???) I guess I’m trying to look at the positive side, but like I said, if this were MY mother, I’d be more than just a little upset. That alzheimers facility that I worked for was very depressing for me (probably explains why I quit it after just a few months!). They changed the residents every TWO hours. It didn’t matter if they were soaked and/or had a load of crap in their pants….if it wasn’t their time to be changed, I saw more than one caregiver who looked the other way. Pissed me off to think that they would probably do the same thing to their own parents. I say ‘what goes around, comes around’….
Restraints being used when not needed?? They shouldn’t use them at all without a doctors order. At least that’s a state LAW here in Oregon. made…..one which came VERY close to killing the resident!! I don’t want to upset you any more than you are already, Rip….but sounds to me like it’s a good time to get your mom the hell out of that place. Don’t ever judge a book by it’s cover…..but ya gotta keep in mind that we’re not all bad eggs! Cameras in every room of facility should be a law but it’s an expense that most facilities won’t deal with unless something drastic happens. (We’ve finally got more security cameras up in the place that I work….NOT because of abuse or neglect tho. Someone from the outside has been coming in and stealing from the elderly folks.) If I’m ever able to open the adult foster home that I would LOVE to do, I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute when it comes to cameras in the place. It’s probably going to be hard for you to trust the caregivers right now. I would hate to be in your shoes, lady. One of my residents is finally moving into an adult foster home this week. Her family wanted to put her in to a nursing home but I convinced them that there are other options since she is still able to do some things for herself and she’s still mentally ‘with it’. I know that if they put her into a NH, Take good care, Ripley! Get the move over with….then sit back for a bit and keep your eyes wide open. No smoking allowed…what good would that do your Mom? Good luck with the new place! Be sure to visit a lot, at random times, without signing in.. That’s what I used to do, just pop in and keep them always on their toes. The aides always told me that those with frequent visitors get much better care. My gparents spent their lifesavings on the place where they went, it was a really good place. But stuff still went on there. Like they max the staff on open house days, or inspection weeks. The rest of the year, they were always understaffed. My gmom had her wedding band stolen (after 55 years of marriage) by (I’m sure) some temp (never recovered it).
(don’t bring any valuable jewelry or stuff) But there are a lot of angels there, too. G-d bless them, it’s a hard job.. Make friends with the nursing aides, they know Everything..

My grandmother is failing fast now, and we’re all grieving over how to handle that. My thoughts and feelings are with you, Ripley.
Don’t ever judge a book by it’s cover…..but ya gotta keep in mind that we’re not all bad eggs! If I’m ever able to open the adult foster home that I would LOVE to do, I wouldn’t hesitate for a minute when it comes to cameras in the place. This is a little off the usual subject but I want to move from the southeast music scene. Is there any new music meccas happening these days? Like Vegas was 10 years ago or Boulder was in the early 1970’s. I need to find work mainly playing but I’m a fledgling producer too and want to live somewhere nice but cheaper than the west coast. Is there such places anymore? Also have a NOS pair of Brimar CV4004’s and some Mullard ECC83’s if anybody needs them. Peace

Austin, Texas is probably the hottest music "mecca" right now. also Vegas is still somewhat hot as is northern Virginia (near D.C.& not cheap), and of course old standby’s such as Seattle (west coast & not cheap) & Nashville (southeast) might be a good time to establish a beachhead in some place like Phoenix or Tucson or El Paso or Colorado Springs before they get really hot. if you are talented you can get work anywhere in the world that you like the weather

I guess you could call austin that, but its music scene is really tiering, there is not alot of variety in their scene, and everyone plays guitar, it is so much work to find bassist or drummers down there. When I was liveing there Austin just killed my desire for makeing music, its jsut to much of the same, no demand for music really, its just there for people to drink to. 99% of the local bands are jsut ignored for the big names that are always comeing in. It is not a good place for the musician or producer, there is already way to many. I would go somewhere where the music scene is just starting. Its alot more fun this way, the venues are alot more open to different kinds of music, the people are alot more intrested in the music, they are used to not haveing live music, once it comes they go nuts for it, its great. I have been watching this hapen up here in Duluth for the past few years years (minus my year in austin) slowly building and now it seems like there is 5 new bands every week. Poeple are opening studios and practice spaces things are getting good. Austin has been going for quite some time now, its life most likely is going to come to an end soon. Um, Tucson has no music scene. And it is not always about talent. Austin is about conenctions, who you know, it has nothing to do with talent. Nsahville seems like the best place to be right now as far as a national music mecca is concerced, lots of things are happening there. Alt Country is just starting gain real acceptance and nashville is the source. It will be a happening city in a few more years most likely. But I would just pick a city you like that has small scene and thats it. It is alot more fun and intresting this way. If you like to struggle and want to try and jam yourself in a population already overflowing with guitarists and producers you should really like Austin. There is no need or demand for anything in Austin other then more roads and fewer people. However Hyde Park is a cheap and very nice place to live if you do end up in Austin, great location, couple miles from downtown with the university as a buffer. All the young couples who are just starting their families end up there. adam

I’ve heard basically what Adam said in his post – Austin is a great place to hear music, but not such a great place to try to make a living playing music. I’ve heard a lot of cool bands coming out of the Denton, TX area, I don’t know if that means it’s an easy place to make a living as a musician. >also Vegas is still somewhat hot as is northern Virginia (near D.C.& not >cheap), and of course old standby’s such as Seattle (west coast & not cheap) >& Nashville (southeast)
I don’t know about Vegas. I’m in No. VA, which is just part of the DC scene, and involves people and clubs in the MD suburbs as well. I think this a great place to make and hear music. There are some wonderful bands and musicians and and I’m proud to call many of them friends. However there’s not a *huge* amount of support – i.e., it’s not a town where many many people go out to hear live music. I guess that’s true of most cities now, compared to the old days. Most of the musicians I know are either holding down a day job or have a spouse with a good job. It *is* an expensive place to live. I used to know Seattle musicians who thought that Seattle was a problem because there are relatively few cities near by, so to do even a little tour means lots of driving. One *good* thing about the DC area is that you’re in the middile of a fairly densely-packed east coast, with a lot of cities and college towns just a few hours away. >might be a good time to establish a beachhead in some place like Phoenix or >Tucson or El Paso or Colorado Springs before they get really hot. >if you are talented you can get work anywhere in the world that you like the >weather
I think the age-old problem is that the "Meccas" are the places that get a rep as having lots of good bands, and that means more competition for anyone who goes there to be a part of it. If you are really good you do have a better chance of being seen by the "industry." That doesn’t mean you get to make money 5 nights a week. I can’t think of any places that are known for good music that don’t have a lot of competition for the available gigs. Of course it depends on what you do, too. If you play in a well-known cover band, or a good wedding band, or you do music for video, that’s different than playing in a heavy metal or a bluegrass band. But you knew that. -Scott McKnight

Hi, Gigged last night with a Peavey Deltablues in a cover/wedding band. On 3 it was too loud, on 2 the soundman said it was alright, but the sound sucked. A tubeamp sounds good when the power tubes are working harder. So I guess I have to go down from 30 watt to 15 watt? What good sounding amps do you know, with reverb that are 15 watt, 2 x EL84 tubes? Thanks, Paul Netherlands.

One of the amps I started looking into, but never got out to try one was a Laney TT20. It’s a single channel amp, with a 12" speaker, two EL84 tubes, and a reverb. If you mean that the Peavey C30 is difficult to service, and takes extra time on the bench, I’ve heard that too. However, they have break first, and I’ve also heard that is a rare occurrence. Lots of the new amps with multiple circuit boards are difficult to work on, Peavey has no patent on that concept. That’s why anyone that wants a truly service friendly amp, gets either a well serviced vintage Point to Point wired amp, or a simply designed ’boutique’. If 3 on a 30 watt amp was to loud I think you might want to go lower the 15 watts. The differance between 15 and 30 watts is not much. I would go with a SE amp, get down under 10 watts. It will give you alot more play with tone, you will have a much more usuable volume knob and will be able to bring it up abit in volume if you want to get your guitar out in front for abit. I would reccomend the THD UniValve with a 2×12 cab and some sort of external reverb since it is without. The UniValve through a 2×12 should be plenty loud, or pretty muuch any other SE amp. adam
Response:
I’ll try the Univalve on my Genz Benz 2 x 12. I like a bit of punch in my clean sounds, so I should get some higher on the volume knob without being too loud for the PA man. This is better than my previous suggestion of an AC15. I own an AC15TBX but have the 30 watt version of the Goldtone, the GA 30RVS. The pentode/triode option of the GA 15RV would be quite useful.
Response:
Carvin makes a 14 watt amp that can be run in triode or pentode configuration. Has "long tailed" reverb and sounded well to me FWIW. The amp practically cries for a Weber VST to match the circuitry. "Carvin’s Vintage 16 is the amp everyone has been asking for. This "all tube" amp features 16 watts from two EL84’s and is switchable from its normal Pentode to "Triode" operation delivering 5 watts. There is nothing sweeter for recording! Great soak and tone is delivered from 3 12AX7 tubes. The Vintage 16 features Volume, Soak, bass, mid, treble and reverb (Accutronics tank)."

Speaking for myself, I’ve been trying to find either the 15rv or the velocette 1×12 — it’s not easy. Some of the relatively well-stocked guitar stores in Madison WI haven’t even heard of either model. Called a dealer in Chicago who told me he could get a 15RV - he said he’d check into it and get back to me; two weeks later I haven’t heard back yet. Most of the goldtone 15 watters and trace elliott velocettes I’ve found on e-bay are the 1×10 models, not the 1×12. Also, the velocettes are notorious for blowing output trannies and sometimes other parts; there are some mods that are needed to help prevent this. Just so you know. Having said that, the rep of either amp for vintage Class-A tone is outstanding. Wish I could actually try one somewhere. Grant

We are booked on Radiance of the Sea for the March 1 Southern Caribbean sailing out of San Juan. We just finished making all the arrangements for our wedding on Megan’s Bay Beach in St. Thomas and we’re really excited! Has anyone else out there gotten married with this plan? It will be just the two of us and it sounds beautiful and romantic. Any tips for making the day as easy as possible that Royal Caribbean doesn’t tell you? Anyone else booked for this cruise? Never been to the southern Caribbean, this is our third cruise and our first on RCCL having previously done Carnival. Hoping for less kids! Really looking forward to Barbados and Antigua we hear they are beautiful. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. Lisa

Maegens Bay is one of the most beautiful areas I have ever seen. We were just there last month and I got a shot of it with my new digital camera. It absolutely took my breath away. You will get some great pictures because the backgrounds will be just fabulous. Best wishes to you. I hope I get to do the Radiance soon because the itenerary sounds just about perfect. Just do it early and don’t get caught in the St Thomas 5:00pm traffic back to the ship. TR

I never did either (wait that long or remember doing so) we got in to Miami about 12, and on board the ship – to our room about 3:20 – we got in line about 1:15 (after security check points) which we had no problem with, the wait was the huge, massive line to check in. Terrible. Otherwise besides the no unlimited drink bands for adults- and the staff upon greeting, over all it met our expectations. But to be SO excited, with hungry kids, and to get on a ship you had no idea to go to, we expected a little "more". Still sad to be home. Kelly
Response:
I suggest to folks on this ship or thinking of it to go in the night before if can be done. We "heard" they had trouble getting the group before us off on time, and were an hour behind. Oh, even if a Latitudes member – I think your wait ranked close to ours. Perhaps we were just unlucky, and we made the best then out of a slow, tiresome situation. There were many people bitching, "could have been to las vegas by now" I understood. My kids did ok, though for the wait. I wondered how folks that had a bad back, or such handled it all or the folks with kids younger then ours (say 2 or smaller). Anyway, off to sleep.. it was a fun ship, it lacks a little I understand how old time cruising and the freestyle can be so different, for us, with our kids and such it worked tremendously well. Will catch up here soon.. (since I am now in the withdrawl period). Sincerely: Kelly H

Question:
Hi Kathy, ti kavis? Well I just got your e-mail, because I do not check my e-mail between Thursday and Friday. I wanted to ask you if you are are considering having your wedding in Greece. I see that your last name is Greek. Where are you from? I am from Corfu and he is from Crete. He was born In Canada and raised in the US, so 50% of his relatives are here. We are having a BIG argument about where the wedding is going to be held. As tradition has it it has to be where the bride is from. But he wants to have it here. I want to have it in my village in Corfu, in the same church were my grandparents, my parents, aunts and uncles had it. Ever since I was a little girl I would dream about having a traditional village wedding with all the preparations and customs that take place. We had a very traditional betrothal at my house – we do not own it – and we had a very traditional engagment at his cousin’s house -because he does not own a house either or his parents. Now is the wedding. He had agreed to have it in Corfu, but then when he started telling his relatives that live here about the Greek wedding, I guess he also changed his mind, and now wants the wedding here! I am very upset! There is no way that I will be a bride here. I do not know if you know how the traditions go, but I have to be dressed a bride in my parents home – but we do not own anything here, we own a beautiful house in Greece. My father has to take me to the church in his car, and we just bought a beautiful white mercedes just for the wedding, and have it in Greece. I am upset and need some support from any other people who go through the same things. Any advice would be helpful, se efharisto, Fotini.
Response:
Hi Fotini, Wow, I really feel for you and the situation you are in. Personally, if I had the opportunity to get married in Greece, I would. It’s so much more exciting than the weddings here and they last longer. John and I are from Kozani and the wedding lasts for about one full week of ‘glendi’. It’s too much of a convenience though for John and I to get married here. An option that you and your fiance can consider is the following: Have two "weddings". 1. Get married in Greece and make sure you have excellent video coverage. This will be THE wedding, church and everything. 2. When you come back with your fiance you can have your second wedding. Here is the difference though. Have a reception only. At the reception you can have a full screen where you will play the video of your wedding in Greece for those in Canada that couldn’t make it. Do everything exactly as you would if you WERE getting married here the only difference is that your guests would view your ceremony on screen rather than in person. Also remember, most people that are invited to the wedding don’t even show up at the church, they come for the reception. If you like you can wear your wedding dress again on that night and get your money’s worth. Everyone will see the wedding as if it was here. Also note, if his relatives, or anyone else from here on either side, REALLY want to be there for the ’stefana’ they will go to Greece. For the others that can’t make it they will be able to celebrate the wedding with you both and that will be just as good. Pass this idea to your fiance he may like it. It’s a bit more expensive but it would be nice. Keep in touch and let me know what’s going on, Katy

thats a toughy it depends if the ceremony is orthodox greek or more hellenic. since im "half greek" and had to take the obligatory classes for Orthodox greeks (pretty much its basic training for girls and boys on how to live and do special days like easter, weddings, … etc I can enlighten you on an Orthodox Greek wedding) (note I have strayed from this and do not believe in these customs my self at all) also everything in a greek ceremony is strickt in sayings and how and when to say things. CEREMONY (note most ceremonies are conducted on a sunday) The number three is very significant throughout all aspects of the entire wedding because it symbolizes the Holy Trinity. and you will be reminded of this during the ceremony several times. The rings are blessed by the celebrant who takes them in his hand and, making the sign of the cross over the heads of the couple, says, "The Servant of God, Demetrios , is betrothed to the handmaiden of God, Elpitha , in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." The best man, or koumbaro then exchanges the rings three times, taking the brides ring and placing it on grooms finger and vice-versa. The wedding service begins immediately following the Betrothal Service. The bride and groom are handed candles which they hold throughout the service. The candles symbolize the spiritual willingness of the couple to receive Christ, who will bless them through this sacrament. The office of the crownin, is the climax of the wedding service. The crowns of the wedding service. The crowns are signs of the glory and honor with which God crowns them during the sacrament. The groom and the bride are crowned as the king and queen of their own little kingdom, the home, which they will rule with wisdom, justice, and integrity. When the crowning takes place, the celebrant takes the crowns and places them on the heads of the bride and groom saying, "O Lord, our God, crown them with glory and honor." The koumbaro (best man), then exchanges the crowns three times , and from this point on, neither the bride nor groom can speak. Vows aren’t exchanged because marriage is considered a union between two people in love, not a contractual agreement. *or so they say* (also after the crowning of the bride and groom they are more seen as the king and queen and in some areas of the country its considdered a faux-pas to say Bride or Groom instead of King & Queen … Last name) wine is given to the couple. This is the "common cup" of life, denoting the mutual sharing of joy and sorrow, the token of a life of harmony. (christ turning water into wine thing) ok something you might find strange but is normal actually is the ceremonial walk The celebrant then leads the couple in a circle around the table on which are placed the "Bible" and the Cross. The husband and wife are taking their first steps as a married couple, and the Church, in the person of the clergy, leads them in the way they must walk. The way is symbolized by the circle at the center of which are the Gospel and Cross of the Lord. This expresses the fact that the way of Christian living is a perfect orbit around the center of life. During this ceremonial walk around the table a hymn is sung to the Holy Martyrs (in my opinion it sounds whiny lol) reminding the newly married couple of the sacrificial love they are to have for each other in marriage, a love that seeks not its own but is willing to sacrifice its all for the one loved. (also seen as the women feeling for the bride as now she has to "submit" to her husband
lol you know what I mean ) RECEPTION PART (again traditional Orthodox) After the ceremony, the group heads to the groom’s house where the flag is once again raised. The bride throws a piece of old iron to the roof to symbolize the strength of her new home. (this can be done before the ceremony) The wedding party and the congregation attend the reception. This event is very dramatic, with a dinner followed by lots of wine and dancing. For example at a cousin of mine’s wedding , the party started at five o’clock, and ended with breakfast the next morning *this is not abnormal*. The dancing begins with the Kumbada, and every member of the wedding party gets a turn to lead. There is a traditional money dance at the reception where people dance with either the bride or groom, pinning money to their clothes. One traditional dance forms with two circles around the bride. It is also tradition during this time to throw money at the musicians and break dishes. The dishes are thrown on the ground for good luck. Throughout the evening, everyone at the reception gets a turn to dance with the bride. Some common aspects occur at the Greek reception, such as the cutting of the cake and the throwing of rice. However, each Greek reception must have Bom Bom Yara, almond candies covered in white chocolate. They are wrapped up in a netting and given to all the guests as they leave. Tradition dictates that there must be an odd number of candies in each package (it cymbolizes that like the bride and groom you can not devide them). OTHER Greek Wedding things that you might not witness since you are a guest and not familiar with the traditions The making of the wedding flag or flamboro marks the beginning of the wedding week. A branch ending with five twigs is found first. Then an apple is tied to one branch and tufts of red wool are other four twigs. This is put up at the bride’s home until the wedding day. The wedding procession is begun at the groom’s house where the wedding flag is raised. Then the flag bearer leads the group proceeds to the bride’s home where the bride’s mother greets the groom. She greets him with a glass of wine, a ring-shaped biscuit and a boutonniere of herbs for his label. He pins the herbs to his lapel, kisses her hand and asks for her blessing. She gives her blessing by kissing him on both cheeks. She may also touch his neck with incense and give him embatikion, a gift to symbolize that his is now a part of the family. Wedding bands are traditionally worn on the right hand, not the left. Gifts.. check if they have a registry. pretty much you can give whatever you wish. Niki,

Hi. My fiance and I are getting married in Los Angeles on May 26th, 2002 and we’re having trouble finding a wedding band that fits us. We’d like a band that can play Jewish music well for the ceremony and for dancing, but can also play Motown stuff really well. We’ve been disappointed with most of the bands we’ve heard so far. Can anybody *please* recommend any awesome bands in the Los Angeles area that might be what we’re looking for? Any suggestions would be a big help (we’re trying to do the planning from New York, and finding a band has been really hard for us). Thanks in advance for any help. -Adam

We used Swinging Tuna Productions (call Tom Gire at 909-898-3601 and tell him Melissa sent you) and they were fabulous. I gave them a must play and do not play list and they learned a few and found CD’s for others (for during their break). We had a five piece band (four musicians and a singer) but they have other combinations. They’re pricing is really reasonable and they did a great job. I can’t recommend them enough!!! They also played a great combination of Jewish music, old fogey music and pop stuff so everyone was happy. — Melissa (03/18/01)

Use a DJ, and give said DJ explicit instructions. They *will* buy whatever CDs you want to hear – they expect to do so. But I must be honest when I tell you that my advice is doubtless colored by my experience of having been forced to use one of the worst bands I (& the bulk of my guests) have ever heard for my own wedding. The tradition (I think) Susan is referring to is the Chair thing for THE PARENTS. It’s called Mizinke. Seated on chairs in the center of the dance floor, the parents are presented with bouquets and circled by the assembled in a dance that celebrates the completion of their parental responsibility. A variation of this theme is the Krenzl, or crowning of the mother who has just seen her last wed.

Because the point of the act is to say "Here is my last child, who I have married off – i.e., taken care of – according to my obligations – I have fulfilled all my obligations!" Susn – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Shelly
Response:
I’ve seen the chair lifting at every Jewish wedding I’ve been to for at least 20 years. There is a specific ceremony for the marrying off of the youngest, but it’s different, I’ve always heard the intrepretation of the chair lifting as descending from the Orthodox weddings where men and women danced separately divided by a partition. The lifted chairs allowed the bride and groom to see each other and to ‘dance’ with the napkin between them. Rachel

Many Jewish brides use, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” I think it’s from The Book of David, but I’m not sure. It’s not explicitly Jewish, so it might work for you if you’re not Jewish too. — Melissa 3/18/01
Hello all, first time poster, long time lurker
My fiance and I are going to order our wedding bands soon. We’re going to have plain platinum bands, nothing too fancy on the outside. On the inside, we’d like to have a quote or verse engraved. It’s a small area to work with, so I’m thinking about putting half of the quote inside his band, and the other half in mine. So my questions are: Has anyone done this or something similar? And does anyone have a suggestion of a short but pretty quote? I appreciate all your help! JH soon-to-be S
Response:
Many Jewish brides use, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” I think it’s from The Book of David, but I’m not sure. It’s not explicitly Jewish, so it might work for you if you’re not Jewish too.
*Song of Solomon, Chapter 2, verse 16 and repeated in Chapter 6, verse 3: “My lover is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies.” Then there’s Chapter 7, verse 10: “I belong to my lover, and his desire is for me.” Hope this helps, Noe *NIV translation, the King James is more poetic.

Some poems and sayings from a “Bridal Souvenir” dated 1876. Maybe these will give you some ideas at least if they are too dated for you. “Our hearts and hands we join” “But for a being without end, this vow of love we take” “Like fire and powder, kissed and flashed to air. Thy soul and mine, by mutual courtship won, Meet like two mingling flames and make but one.” “When two that are linked in one heavenly tie, With heart never changing and brow never cold, Love on through all ills, and love on till we die.” “But Love is indestructible. Its holy flame for ever burneth, From heaven it came, to heaven it returneth” “So soft our moments move, That angels look with ardent gaze, Well pleased to see our happy days, And bid us live and love.” “Our hearts are so entwined That, like the ivy round the tree, Bound up in closest amity, tis death to be disjoined.”– “Our meeting hearts Consented soon, and marriage made us one.” Aimee

Hi Jen, My husband and I did the same thing years ago and have loved it ever since. On the out side the band says “Always and forever” and inside it says “In God’s Care” Actually you could fit the whole saying on the outside and the date and your initials on the inside.. Best wishes.. Hello all, first time poster, long time lurker

It’s from the Song of Songs, other wise called Song of Solomon. It is in the Hebrew Scripture or the Old Testament if you are using a Christian Bible. love and xxxises — shullie

These are great suggestions eveyone! Thank you and keep them coming! Nothing is too dated – I think the older ones are quite romantic. Bible verses are great too. If I find some myself I’ll post them here in case anyone else is looking for ideas. Thanks so much

Sorry, I clicked send before I finished my text. You may find some good ones in that link, but there’s lots of just normal bible verses. You’d have to read through it all. — Aimee http://pweb.jps.net/~aimeesplace

Those bible verses are mostly about *love* in general… The song of solomon had the best ones related to marriage. Here’s a few other quotes I found from this link http://www.aphids.com/cgi-bin/quotes.pl?act=ShowSubjects: These are great! Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, and ends with a teardrop. — Anonymous We always believe our first love is our last, and our last love our first. — Anonymous If ever two were one, then surely we. If ever man were loved by wife, then thee. — Anne Bradstreet Love does not consist in gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction. — Antoine de Saint-Exup

Stanley Clarke, Abraham Laboriel, and the bassist for Ivo Papasov & His Bulgarian Wedding Band all use four finger technique.
