The Bugger Issue….(I think there's an issue)
Question:
>Some of you seem offended by the term bugger.
Hey, you poor bugger, you forgot the phrase "poor bugger." Dang. Mike
Response:
Gosh, My post was meant to be entertaining not condescending! My humble apologies if that has occurred. I gotta say that I feel well and truly thwacked across the face. Thank goodness people are diverse, and can have opposing viewpoints. I choose to see lots of different things in the world, and not all of them are good…. but I won’t killfile all the things that I don’t agree with, because I don’t want to have a narrow view of the world. I might be wrong with a lot of the things that I believe, but they are my beliefs. I don’t need a personal attack like this. Ann

Not being at all offended by the term "bugger," and never in my 42 years of life in the USA, (hanging out in small towns and big cities with folks from ALL walks of life), never once having heard anyone use the word "buggery," I had to go look it up. I have a big fat dictionary… Random House Dictionary of the English Language, 2nd Ed., Unabridged. It weighs in at about 20 lbs. There are seven definitions for bugger, most of which are "Chiefly British slang." True, "sodomite" is in there, referred to as "Often Vulgar." But, there is also 4 b., an annoying or troublesome thing, situation, etc., which, indeed, could define this bummer (oops, did I just refer to someone’s ass??) of recovery from a horrible addiciton for me. While I was growing up, my father never wore his wedding ring. His response to those who might consider such behavior inappropriate, "I know I’m married." I like to think that I’m also strong in my own perceptions of myself. Also, check out the definition for sodomy. More of us are buggers than you might think! If it is because of the biblical ramifications that it offends, then I apologize to anyone who is offended, but I do ask that, for literary reasons, we don’t narrow the definition. Still all for being a June Bugger, whatever it might mean to anyone else. I don’t give a nose hair what we’re called. The idea is that we’re here to support each other, simply by being part of a group. Strength in numbers, I say. If snowtree wants to be on her own, that is entirely up to her. I may regret that I’ve jumped in on this thread, but there’s no one here but the laundry to rant to! Some of you seem offended by the term bugger. I have to say that as an Australian, the word bugger is probably one of the least offensive names that you could call someone. Let me share with you some of the contexts in which it is used. The source is The Concise Macquarie Dictionary (an Australian English dictionary). Apart from the obvious meaning, a bugger is person or child (as in ‘you little bugger’). It can also be a foul or contemptible person. ‘Bugger all’ means nothing as in ’she left me with bugger all’. To ‘play silly buggers’ means to engage in time-wasting activities or frivolous behaviour…(something I’m sure does not apply to Aussies!). To ‘bugger around’ or about can be alternated with ‘buggerise about’ and means to mess about or fiddle around. ‘Bugger off’ is to remove oneself or is a strong exclamation of annoyance. Aussie’s also use the terms ‘like buggery’ which means considerably…as in the horse ran like buggery. ‘Go to buggery’ is another favourite which is basically used as an alternative to ‘piss off’. ‘Off to buggery’ means greatly off course or astray ( which is what I may be here methinks) And one which I use frequently is ‘buggered up’ as in I’ve buggered up my life by smoking! So as you can see, ‘bugger’ is ingrained in the Australian psyche (well in mine anyway) so there is no need to be offended. I respect your right to not want to be a June Bugger, but I’m not sure I want to be a June Mooner either! I think it was Coleen who accidentally on purpose called us the June Buggies….I can live with that…can you? Ann

Dear Ann: I am well aware of the usage of the word "bugger" in most of your illustrations. I have friends all around the world and one of my closest friends is Australian. I am actually semi-literate. It has been pointed out to me in the past that the fact is more then a bit difficult to glean from my postings. Buggery is also a slang term for sodomy in the USA. I am an American. I found being called a Bugger irritating rather then amusing, and so I did not chose to participate in your quit group or answer any posts in the thread until my name came up once too often for my taste. That is why I replied at all. Call me uptight if you like. I also do not care to be referred to as a slut unless it’s a joke – and it had better be somebody that I know very well. Bugger fits in that category. I do not know you that well, nor shall i ever take that opportunity. The June Mooner thing was a joke, Ann. Sorry you could not see that. This post of mine, however, is not a joke. I am pissed off by your condescending manner. You are now in my killfile, so we can no long annoy each other or anyone else with our replies to each other. <much snippage> : Also, check out the definition for sodomy. More of us are buggers than you might : think! MON DIEU!!! From Webster’s New World Dictionary, Third College Edition: "Any sexual intercourse held to be abnormal". I’m in biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig trouble. Could probably be arrested in more than a few US states, even. Probably will have to go several times around the beads (rosary) in order to achieve salvation. Maybe even THAT won’t help……. Wait a minute . . . anyone who’s had a dick in their mouth or ass is a slut? I don’t think so . . . USAer, Sass
Response:
Sassy – I’m with you, but given the number of new quitters in the group right now and the accompanying level of tension, do we really want to go here at this time? Perhaps we could have a special chat on IRC about the definition of slut. We could even have a special room so as to not offend anyone. Diane M. Got questions? Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. ?? What better way to get rid of tension other than sex? <g> I think the reason every one is so tense is from the prolongued tiptoeing that’s been going on around here. Let’s get our views out, let’s talk about it, otherwise we just keep holding it in until there’s an explosion. I think my whole personality is my own disclaimer that I may be offensive at times. I’ve heard the sound of one hand plonking me. So be it. Liven it up folks, you only live once!
