I dont think there is a tradition. actually my DH inherited one before we even met. and some families never owned and never will own one. If DH didnt already have one, we probably would never own one either. I just see it as something to stub my foot on every night. Also you shouldnt set rules on "X must give me …" If you get one as a gift .. great, if not it might be nice for both of you to go shopping for one. Niki,

My Two older brothers gave me mine on my sixteenth birthday. By the time I was married I had it filled with all manner of things for my home. For Christmas and birthday presents from then on I usually received things for my home. Towels, small appliances, dishes and the like. I didn’t really make a lot of hand-embroidered towels and such but I had a lot of stuff in that hope chest, in a way it was the very first piece of furniture I ever owned. What I am about to give you is the traditional list of responsibilities as given by Emily Post’s 16th Edition etiquette. Even though there is a traditional list, it comes with the caveat that brides and grooms who are grown and living on their own should be responsible enough to pay for their own wedding. Family members may contribute as they so desire, but no one family or person should bear the cost of a wedding for two mature persons. Letitia Baldrige and Judith Martin also recognize that in this day and age, the bride and groom are typically older, working, living on their own and thus are responsible for paying for their own wedding. It is also noted that no one should ever go into debt to pay for a wedding. Wedding Dress Superstition

I think it’s amazing that the people who say to follow all the ettiquette rules about dress and other parts of the wedding are the ones who say the heck with the groom not seeing the bride in her dress before the wedding.. Hmmmmmm… makes you wonder what other rules (?) or traditions that they threw out the window.. I think the bride and groom not seeing each other before the wedding is more in line with a tradition than a superstition…But then most traditions are flaunted these days as being old fashioned and not having any merit, that is unless it’s something that has to do with the rules set up by one of the ettiquette mavons… I’m just happy that I had the special time before the wedding to spend with my daughter but if she had spent the night in her and her FH’s apartment that would have been missed…..I was thrilled when she asked me to help her with her dress.. that was a once in a lifetime moment that I’ll never forget…

Many people choose to get the two rings soldered (did I spell it right this time?) together. That can be done before or after the wedding. We chose to do it before hand since we are moving 3,000 right after the wedding and do not need anything else to worry about in those final few days. This is a Jewish custom, which derives from the biblical story in which Jacob was tricked into marrying Leah rather than Rachel (who he really loved and intended to marry), because she hid her face from him during the ceremony. IIRC (I’m not Jewish myself, but grew up with and have attended the weddings of several friends who are), the custom is that just before the ceremony, the bride and groom sign the ketubah (marriage contract), and then the groom gazes into the bride’s face (confirming that she is, indeed, the woman he has chosen to marry) and then lowers the veil over her face. -HB

Actually he is very helpful when it comes to helping me pick out clothes, and gets a bit huffy if I turn down his suggestions, so buying a dress together woiuld have been very interesting… If he likes to help you shop, then great! My daughter’s now husband wanted to be in on everything to do with the wedding, but the dress is the one thing that we put our foot down on.. He saw the dress in a book and he did say he liked it.. We really wanted him to be surprised when he saw her in it.. As a matter of fact, since most of my daughter’s familiy and friends were coming from out of town, she used the bridal suite the night before the wedding and after the rehearsal dinner, we met with some of the out of towners for an impromptu batchelorette party… We were doing some last minute assembly on the aisle bows and having a great time together.. My daughter was so glad to have that time to spend that was just for her… Thank goodness we insisted that he stay with his Mom for that night… As a matter of fact, I think it was important that he spend his last night as a single man with his Mother.. I’m sure she appreciated it, even if he didn’t…

I’m not so sure that look is because it’s the first time he’s seen the dress, though. My husband had that same deer-in- the-headlights look when I showed up at the end of the aisle, even though he’d seen the dress (and me in it) previously. The exact nature and practice of superstitions is extremely variable and personal. If you want your groom to see your dress, you in your dress, whatever at any point before the wedding, I highly doubt that lightening will strike you dead, or that any hope of a happy marriage will have been dashed by this act alone. If you want him to see the dress, and he wants to see the dress, then by all means show it to him. My fiance does not want to see the dress (let alone me in it) before the wedding. I think it’s a silly custom, and would actually kind of preferred to get all of our photos out of the way before the ceremony, so we aren’t rushed or holding up dinner. I totally agree w/you! I couldn’t imagine my husband having never seen my wedding dress before the actual event. After all, I had a say in what he wore for the wedding, so he had a say in what I wore for the wedding. When I first started thinking about what I wanted my wedding dress to be, I consulted with my husband about it. I was designing my own gown, & there were 3 very different designs I was considering. I got opinions from various ppl, not the least of which was my husband. Good thing too, because he really didn’t like 2 of the designs (& it was the general consensus of everyone I talked to as well). Likewise, we designed his wedding outfit, & I had a lot of input into that (of course, I helped make some of it too . I would *never* have surprised my husband with any other wedding element. I wouldn’t say "sorry hon, you can’t see the minister till our wedding day" or "you can’t go to the caterer’s tasting because I want the food to be a surprise." It’s *his* wedding too, & he had equal say in *everything* that went on that day. Ppl go on about the "romance" of first seeing the bride in her wedding dress walk down the aisle. Well, according to my husband, it was no less romantic seeing me walk down the aisle on our wedding day. He may have seen the dress, but he hadn’t seen it w/all the trimmings (hairdo, veil, jewelry, makeup, flowers). And besides, when he’d seen the dress before, it wasn’t a minute before we were going to be married! The meaning of the day & having all yr friends & family being there is what makes it special, not a surprise dress. –T. My groom saw my dress, but not on me, prior to the wedding. His reaction when he saw me in the dress the day of the wedding was one of my favorite parts of the day. He was speechless. Actually, he kept repeating the same phrase in Ukrainian over and over, and finally the minister said, "Can he say anything else? I guess he is happy." (No one else understood what he was saying except me–and it was nice.) I don’t care about the superstition, but his reaction was priceless.

An *old* Emily Post discusses this not in terms of superstition, but in terms of anticipation. She said waaaaaay back when that the groom does not see his bride in the dress at the church until time for her entrance. That means he did see her on prior to the wedding on that day and that it’s possible he did see her gown prior to the wedding day. However, waaaaay back when, it was not common that men were interested in dresses and such. Grooms simply lit up when they saw their lovely bride walking down the aisle, the dress being an accessory to her own radiance. Hope this helps, Noe

It depends on which version of the superstition you’re going for Some people believe that the groom shouldn’t ever see the bride in her dress, and others think it only applies to the wedding day. I’m guessing the former couldn’t possibly have been in force for too long, as many women got married in dresses they already owned and which their prospective husbands had probably seen. LOL. I spent my weekend out of trouble at the florist’s, devoting hours to the big tulips vs. calla lilies debate. I did not want to keep any of this a secret from my fiance, but when I tried to tell him about the pros and cons of the parrot tulip, he yawned and rubbed his eyes. Actually, I do have friends who recently married that somewhat fit my above description. There was some quasi-infidelity a few months before the wedding (the bride, not the groom, in fact, and this is information I really wish I didn’t know) and you should see the two of them fight–no physical abuse, but the curses they scream at each other! In front of other people, too! Compared to that, my under-the-breath comments about the other drivers on the BW Parkway at rush hour would be considered "tender!" Of course, at their wedding, bride went to SUCH extreme lengths to make sure that there was NO CHANCE that the groom would see her before the ceremony–he actually stayed in a seperate hotel several miles away from where she and the rest of the wedding guests were staying…an important measure to take…after all, you know what bad luck can do to a marriage.

Not if you’re Jewish! In a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony, the groom actually places the veil on the bride before the wedding, so he absolutely sees her in the dress beforehand. I’m Jewish and there are people in my family who have been married for more than 60 years who did that tradition, so I guess the "bad luck curse" doesn’t apply to us! I do think it’s "bad luck" if the bride and groom beat each other senseless before the wedding, keep huge secrets from each other, or sleep around with members of the bridal party before the big day. My fiance was with me when I bought my dress. I think the tradition is that the groom does not see the dress at all before the wedding. That is what my mom wanted, anyway. There is no way that was going to happen as I wanted his opinion of the dress. Afterall, I want to have a dress that he thinks is flattering on me and I value his opinion. Besides, I know what his clothes look like, so why shouldn’t he see mine? If it means a lot to you to not have him the see the dress, go for it. wrap ring

If they aren’t soldered, they don’t fit together very well. I tried mine on many times before it was soldered and the two pieces did not stay together very well. As well, I have heard that it’s a lot easier to lose them if they are not soldered. I’m not sure why that would be, but I know a few people who have lost their un-soldered rings. Maybe because they’re one larger ring rather than two smaller ones? Personally, I think it looks nicer as well. It is "supposed" to look smooth and clean… basically like one ring rather than 2. Having gaps the first time around seems pretty common. I talked to a friend who has hers soldered and she said they had to take it back 5 times to get it right.

My wedding ring is also a wrap. We sent both the engagement and wedding ring out together to get fitted for when they will be soldered after the big day. The first time they came back, there was a large gap, probably similar to yours. We explained to the jeweler that we didn’t want the gap, and it has since been fixed after sending it out again.

Um, "That’s SOLDERED." is a sentence. That’s is a contraction of that is. You’ve got pronoun and verb there. It’s such fun trying to teach a beginning reader that not all English words are pronounced as they are written. I was going to start one about Antonio Banderas, then I keep remembering something my grandmother once told me: "All men’s socks smell the same when you fish them out of the laundry basket to wash ‘em." Took all the romance out of my youth when all I could think about wondering if so-and-so’s socks smelled. My grandmother was not much of a romantic. She had 13 live births and 16+ pregnancies. She was a real live baby machine, and her husband did not feel at all guilty because he was able to support them all financially. He was 14 years her senior and they were married when she was 17. Their first born, my mom, was born 3 months after their marriage. He was engaged to a very successful woman his age. The jilted woman gave my grandmother her engagement and wedding rings, her hope chests and the gown. The story is interesting and I will have to write about it someday. However I don’t think it really matters. There is a lot more to getting married than a ring. It does not actually bother me that it has gone I was not angry, I didn’t really care. wasn’t it insured? most homeowners policies cover wedding rings. if not, everyone else getting married should look into this! your jewler has to send your insurance company the details of the ring (carat, cut, etc), but it is worth it. i would be devistated if i lost my ring, but i would feel worse if i knew that it would never be replaced!

The base coverage for our homeowners policy, which I understand to be fairly standard, will only pay $1000 per item, $2500 total for jewelry. After we got married, we had to itemize several pieces of Cathy’s jewelry (including her engagement/wedding set) and my wedding ring in order to get proper coverage. Please, everyone, get your rings insured! Here in Minnesota, there was a story in the news a week or so ago about a bride-to-be that lost her ring down an ice-fishing hole. Something I saw in a flower arranging book that looked fairly simple. We’re painting the clay pots to coordinate with the reception hall and the flowers. Then, you line the pot with foil, stick a big chunk of soaked florist’s foam in it, and make an arrangement of roses and ivy trimmed very short, making sort of a half-sphere over the rim of the pot. –Susan (and Dylan) 9/4/99

After the last "3 months to go – update" thread, I realized that we still had a ton of stuff to do, so we’ve done a lot since then! In that time, we have: hired the florist composed, ordered and received invitations asked FH’s step-brothers to be ushers (the only attendants that had yet to be asked, and I was starting to feel really bad about it!) found and bought the flowergirl dress met with the rabbi again found a place to make our wedding rings (now we just have to make a digital file of the pattern so they can do it!) got my first dress fitting scheduled our tasting had our engagement photo session …and probably a few more things I’ve forgotten! The only big thing left is the music – we were going to have a band (FH’s idea), but our plan fell through. He now has until the 20th to find one, or we go with a DJ! Plus a million details – we have to finalize the "out of town" enclosures and make the map so we can actually get invitations out. Plus getting all addresses finalized, etc. (And make sure his mom stops changing his mind – she just added back the people we had had on the B list and she JUST SAID to delete them for sure!) We have a DATE!! April 22 it is, no moaning and groaning about the Easter/Lent thing, except that Mom is saying that she’s going to be crunched doing the bulletins for all the church services (she’s church secretary), but we’re going to do all the stuff for the ceremony off our computer, so she won’t have to worry about our programs, and she normally tries to have all the bulletins for Easter done early anyway. The folks think an outdoor ceremony at my grandparent’s homestead is way cool, the big issue is reception site and table and chair rental for the ceremony and reception. One reception site has good facilities but icky ambience (BAAAAD junior high memories for me in there) and the other one has no tables or chairs, but plenty of parking and a great site for the fireworks display. My brother was married last year, with just a JP ceremony at the courthouse, and a big party that weekend, and they did NOT want parents present at the actual marriage ceremony. So, even though planning an out and out wedding and reception is going to be a little more stressful, I think she’s excited about doing her daughter’s wedding. Dad is being dad, and going along for the ride. Mom has already volunteered him to build a platform and arbor/trellis for the ceremony at the farm. My sister and I found a great pattern for my dress, (sort of a Grecian column with cowl thing) and the basic dress will also work for the attendants. I also picked up the pattern for the poet’s shirts for the guys, and we’re going to finagle with the costume guy we know about doing their vests. (Ornate vests rather than a suit or tux thing) We’ve pretty much decided on royal blue and silver/ivory as colors. On the TO DO List: I need to call my friend that I want as an attendant when they get back from Ohio. We need to decide if we’re having an engagement picture done. If we’re getting an engagement pic done, do we do picture postcards as the Save the Date announcement? When do we have a reception for our friends where we are now that are going to be unable to attend the wedding in Nebraska? I need to get a general count on guest list from MOG after they get home around Aug. 15. And, of course, the myriad little details that I need to sit down and present to FH for his opinions. Everything is just about set to go. I just finished the little poems that go with the disposable cameras yesterday. I have to buy the tulle to wrap them in and attached the poems. My aunt and I are going to be making chocolate candy to use as favors. I am going to order the liquor and beer tomorrow. I will get the centerpieces done within the next few weeks. MOG still is looking for a dress so the lady doing the flowers is waiting for her. The flower lady is still looking for the flowers to put on the cake. We are going tomorrow to apply for the marriage license. Met with the band members last week and set all the music up. What are you doing with centerpieces? I’m contemplating doing those myself. As for our recent accomplishments: We took a "hard hat" tour of the hotel where the wedding and reception will be. Construction is really coming along. It looks like the tower is as tall as it will get and now they’re framing up the area where the ballrooms are. Landscaping is supposed to go in shortly and the hotel is scheduled to open in early March (our wedding is in mid-July). We booked our photographer (hi Nathan!). We discovered that people on Brian’s side who we all had pretty much figured would decline the invitation are making plans to attend. His folks have said that if their "count" exceeds the allotment they’d spring for the extra guests. We’re thinking we might want to add some rooms to the group block at the hotel…. We bought the flowers for the bridesmaids’ bouquets. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get them done before reporting for new teacher orientation on the 17th. Brian asked his best man. He had been debating between a good friend from college (who he was best man for) and a friend from junior high that he is still in touch with. He chose the junior high friend. We moved! It’s just around the corner (we can see the old apartment complex from our new apartment) but it’s much nicer. You read my mind… I was just thinking of starting an update thread myself. It sounds like you guys are getting alot done! I hope that I can say the same real soon. :-) Jason and I went to meet with our florist again yesterday. This time she met us at the wedding site. First we went over the ceremony location, which will be on a covered verandah overlooking the lake. I decided that I didn’t want flowers out there. With the lake and the view and all, I didn’t want to take away from that, so we were going to keep it as simple as possible. I decided to go with lots and lots of big ferns with tulle bows on them, as well as some groupings of greens on the columns with tulle bows. I wanted everything to be green and white, so that although it looks like there is a wedding there, it also blends in a little with the surroundings. I think I am going to really love it and also it will be very inexpensive (as compared to flowers). On the rental list that our florist gave us, the ferns are only $5 each! I assume the tulle bows might add a couple of dollars, but still, I thought that was a good price! We then went inside to look around the reception room. We decided on more ferns and some ficus trees (all with tulle bows) around the edges of the room to sort of fill in. Then we decided on our centerpieces. We won’t be using any candles since its a daytime wedding. I just couldn’t picture it, so I figured no. So we are going to have one low but wide arrangement in the center of every table in whites, off whites and maybe some hints of blue and lavender. It will be stock, delphinium, roses, daisies… I like that airy ‘wildflower’ look. I told her that as long as there was NO baby’s breath, carnations or leatherleaf fern, I was fine with it (I despise all those things). All over the table I asked her to just kind of lay around some silk ivy, then to put some small glass vases of flowers (maybe 4-6 per table) amongst the ivy and around the main arrangement so that the table looks full of flowers. I suppose this will cost more than I was planning, but since I went with all greens for the ceremony site, why not go a little over the top for the tables, right? Just a little… hehe. We decided on using the same flowers for the buffet tables, only instead of low and wide, we are going high and smaller in tall glass vases. I also asked for ivy to be spread about those tables and maybe a few of the small glass vases of flowers to fill in however she saw fit. We decided on all white and off white for my bouquet, with just a tiny hint of blue. It will be mostly of roses and orchids, with some stephanotis and caspia here and there. For my MOH bouquet, it will be roses, stephanotis, and delphinium… I wanted her bouquet to have more color. Both will be just bunched together and tied with a sheer white ribbon. For corsages we will have orchids, tea roses and caspia (with sheer white bows). Jason’s boutonniere will be all stephanotis with a bit of caspia and the rest of the bouts will be roses and caspia. That is about it for flowers… We have also been working our rears off on our invitations. We are making our own and I’m trying to get them all put together before I go to Orlando next weekend for my first dress fitting. Mom and MOH/Sister are going to help me stuff and address envelopes. I am so glad to finally have an entire weekend with just the women and dedicated to the wedding. I haven’t had this yet and I am so excited. Anyways, about our invites, we bought the envelopes and ribbon yesterday. I put a sample invitation together and I love it! I now just have to get the rest of them put together and what a job that is going to be! It is definitely worth the $150-$200 we are saving, though… not to mention that these are exactly what I wanted and I couldn’t find anything like them anywhere. I would strongly recommend making invitations to anyone! That is about it for now… keep your fingers crossed for me that I get more done in the next couple of weeks. I still don’t have someone to make my cake (although the florist had someone she couldn’t stop talking about, so I may look into that person). How is everyone else doing? We’ve gotten enough done lately that I thought I’d brag a little and start an updates thread. Anyway, it’s four weeks to the big day, and our recent accomplishments include: 1. Finalizing the details of the catering. We’re having fewer guests than we’d originally hoped–more like 50 or 60 than 100 or more, but I’m OK with it. We’ll just have more time to spend with them, and we were able to splurge a little on the food, particularly with dessert. We’re still going with a pretty simple luncheon and appertizers buffet, but with a scrumptious array of cakes, cheesecakes, pies, tiramisu, etc. 2. Meeting our organist and picking the music. We went with traditional, but not cliched (we hope): -Family entrance: "Sheep May Safely Graze," Bach -Bridesmaids: "Rigaudon," Campra -Bride: "Allegro Maestoso" from Water Music, Handel -Recessional: "The Heavens Declare (Psalm 19)", Marcello Mostly traditional, that is. The groom will make his entrance to the U. of Colorado fight song, and the song after the official recessional will be Penn’s main school song, "The Red and the Blue." We’ve also settled that our pre-ceremony soloist will be singing "The King of Love My Shepherd Is" and "And Can It Be That I Should Gain." Congregational hymns will be "Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah" and "Be Thou My Vision." Our other soloist is singing Bruce Cockburn’s "Love Song", and two other brilliantly musical friends are writing a duet that they’ll sing for us. If we have room, we’ll include another hymn, maybe "Fairest Lord Jesus" or "To God Be the Glory." It’s a lot of music, but music is very important to us. 3. Finalizing our vows, pending ministerial approval. 4. Not strictly wedding-related, but WE FOUND A PLACE TO LIVE!!!!! And it’s a *house*, not an apartment. We’re renting–ownership is several years away–but I’m excited that our first home will be a real house, not an anonymous apartment. 5. I went to Michael’s and got the flowerpots, paint, and florist’s foam we need for the centerpieces. –Susan (and Dylan) 9/4/99

You can do either, but if she wears it, she will wear it on her right hand, then switch it to the left hand after the ceremony. The wedding band is worn closest to the heart, so the engagement ring is worn on the outside of the wedding band. You can give her both, though. That works too. Some people have them soldered together before the wedding, so they have to do both. I had mine soldered together after the wedding. Either way, the wedding band is first, then the engagement ring ("usually" — some people do the opposite). Strange… why wouldn’t she take the e-ring off? If she wanted the symbolism of never taking the ring off… well, she did it anyway! Plus, it meant she had to take her wedding ring off so soon after she got it. I know people (well, 1, but I’m sure there are others!) who have *never* taken their wedding rings off. Pretty impressive! DH actually went several months with his. One day we set out to stain a piece of furniture, both taking our rings off so we wouldn’t get anything on them. I’m keeping my engagement ring on, where it is as normal on my left hand, Brian will put my wedding ring on so its engagement ring then wedding ring and then I’ll switch positions so its wedding ring then engagement ring after the ceremony. My engagement ring doesn’t fit on my right hand as the finger is bigger and also, it simply feels weird, both to have a ring on another finger and to not have my engagement ring on that finger. When I got married, I gave the Best man my engagment ring right before the wedding, then during the ceremony, my hubby put both rings back on my finger, vowing never to take them off. Well I forgot about that water retention thing. (is this in the faq? It ought to be!) She can either: Switch her e-ring to another finger, and either put it back (or not) on her left hand once the wedding ring is on. (this is what I did, keeping the e-ring on my right hand.) Have her MOH hold/wear her e-ring, and get it back after the ceremony. Give you her e-ring, and you put them both on. The usual practice in the U.S. is that the bride wears her engagement ring on a different finger (or takes it off entirely) for the ceremony. The groom puts the wedding ring on the fourth finger of her left hand during the ceremony. She then, after the ceremony, slips the engagement ring back on top of it — or not, if she didn’t bring the engagement ring or intends to wear it on her right hand instead. Wende

I am hardly the right person to comment on this, since my knowledge about marriage customs is purely academic, but this is very, very hard to resist. The impressions from watching marriages around me and hearing descriptions about marriages, it seems to me that marriage customs in general are picked up from American soaps. That I believe, makes us continental, only we belong to whatever continent the set of customs projected in the soap comes from. Or maybe we could call it continentlessness, aka reverse emotional incontinens? Arne
