What Does Your Ring Look Like?

Question:

What does your engagement ring look like? Is it elaborate or simple? Did you pick it out or did he? If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something different?  If so, what? What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with it?  Is it a set? Will they match?  What does he plan to get? Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?) I’ll answer first.  My engagement ring is a solitaire, brilliant cut 1 ct. diamond.  It is in a tiffany setting (very simple).  My husband picked it out.  It is absolutely perfect!!  I only told him I wanted a round stone, but he probably would have gotten that for me anyway because that is what he likes too.  He is an engineer, so I knew it would be of good quality, but I didn’t expect such a large stone.  I was shocked when I got it because we were both still in college, so we didn’t have much money.  Plus, he asked me to marry him much sooner than I expected too!!  I have a plain 4 mm gold wedding band (comfort fit — recommended).  The two rings are soldered together (which I highly recommend).  I am a simple person and don’t like many frills.  I wanted something of quality, very simple, yet beautiful, which is what I got. I did not want to detract from my beautiful stone with an elaborate wedding band, so I knew all along that I wanted a plain band.  He was going to get something a little more elaborate, but he ended up getting the exact same ring as me.  I would say that my rings fit my personality more so than my lifestyle.  I am very active, but my ring is not a result of that.  His ring probably fits both his personality and lifestyle because he works on the car a lot.  That is it on our rings. Some people > are concerned w/ cut, or carat weight, color, or clarity.  I choose > color and clarity to get finicky about.  So it’s a nice sparkly stone. > The band is a 2mm white gold band.

I agree.  I actually believe that the color makes all the difference in the appearance, even more than the clarity.  My husband looked at many loose diamonds in the sunlight and determined the same thing.  Therefore, he got me a diamond with VERY good color and fairly good clarity (it is hard to get good clarity the bigger the diamond).  So, mine is very sparkly too.  If I had a choice, I would choose color, then clarity as well.  I was just fortunate enough to get it all, I guess. My hands are quite small, so I thought the diamond would look too big, but it really doesn’t. > My wedding band is a plain 2mm white gold band.  His band is wider, > white gold, with simple etching aroung the edges. > I hope I don’t lose it.  I’ll probably only wear the wedding band after > the wedding, and bring out the diamond for special occasions. : )

So you don’t lose it, make sure it fits perfectly.  I got my sized to the 1/4 size.  Also, just don’t ever take it off.  If you do, have a special place you keep it.  I never take mine off except to clean it (which is in the morning when I’m spraying hairspray, putting mousse in my hair, and putting on lotion).  I just throw my ring in my sonic cleaner.  It does a great job with no scrubbing! Your ring sounds almost exactly like my college roommate’s!!  Hers was gorgeous!  I just couldn’t stand the fact that she complained about how it was so small.  I really liked it a lot!! > Now I am having problems at work with my > diamond going through my gloves (work in a clinical lab). That’s cool.  I know what you mean about everyone wanting to change their setting.  That is why I stuch with a very traditional, simple setting.  I will keep it this way forever.  I can’t imagine ever wanting to change it!!

I was browsing in an area of town where they are lots of antique stores and a few estate jewelers.  David had asked me to marry him awhile before, but we had decided that during the summer we could get my ring. I saw this one and knew it was for me.  Passed on the info to him and it became mine! It’s from the 1930s, 18k yellow gold with a round diamond about 1/3 of a carat.  the diamond is set inside a square either white gold or platinum setting with a small diamond to either side set lower in the same gold. The side pieces join the yellow gold in an ornate design that is hard to describe, but it has so much detail it is just beautiful.  The wedding band was my grandma’s from 1928…a thin 18k yellow gold band with 3 tiny diamonds set into it.  It’s perfect for the size of my hand and the sentimental value of my grandmother’s wedding ring is just right. I never thought about the idea of previously owned jewelry, but I like the idea of the ring having history. Susan

I’ve been reading these posts "Oh, I take it off daily to clean"…"I clean it once a week, and feeling very, very, guilty. > Coming from somebody who has very little "good" jewelry, I love my ring > to death, but it almost scares me to wear it!  For one, I’m a bartender > & I just hate when I spill something on it…I guess I’m still in the > "ohmygod, I gotta RING!!!" phase!

I own *one* pair of earrings, a bracelet (that my mom bought for someone else, but ended up giving it to me.  I think I’ve worn it once.) and my everyday watch (which I wore for my wedding =)  I now also own an engagement ring and wedding band, and it’s a *big* change! > Do you guys wear yours always, or take it off for chores/swimming/other > misc. activities?  And, how does everybody care for and clean their > rings?  I was making dinner the other day and was afraid to get it dirty

I don’t take mine off as often as I should.  I went rock climbing this summer, and realized as I was busy scraping it against a rock that I maybe shouldn’t have worn it.  At this point it was too late because there was nowhere I’d feel comfortable leaving it, so I kept it on.  I take my e-ring off when I wear latex gloves (and I *intend* to take it off when I’m going somewhere that might require gloves, but I typically forget.  Happily, it hasn’t popped one yet!) but not for other chores.  I’ve never really felt the need.  As for care…well, they get a shower every day!  Whenever we’re in the mall (once every few months) I get it cleaned at a jewelry store (they do it free) and admire how sparkly it becomes.  That’s about it.  I usually don’t worry about getting it dirty…I have an old toothbrush to scrub it with if need be. > What does your engagement ring look like?

Okay…those of you who remember the lingo from geometry will have an easier time with this… it has a gold band, about 2mm, whose edges are more square than round (a cross section of the band would be squarish) with a four prong setting holding a 1/3 c. diamond.  Then there are four white gold bands (two on each side of the diamond) that are perpendicular to the ring itself, and go all the way around, save the side that’s against my hand. > Is it elaborate or simple?

The only ring less simple is a tiffany setting. > Did you pick it out or did he?

We did!  We picked out the diamond rather easily, and both fell in love with the band.  For some reason it seemed very important that we look at other bands, so we looked in half a dozen other jewelry stores, trying to describe the above setting, and find something like it.  Everyone showed us rings with baguettes ‘n stuff in them, which was in no way what we wanted.  We finally realized we were being stupid, and went back to the first store.  They were amused.  I love that *nobody* has an engagement ring that looks like ours (don’t burst my bubble on this one…) yet it’s still very simple. > What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with > it?  Is it a set?

Wedding band is plain gold, maybe 3mm band.  This one, if you took a cross section, would be a semi-circle.  They don’t go together because of the white gold bands on the e-ring (they kept trying to get us to notch the wedding band, which I am violently opposed to!).  We considered notching the bands on the e-ring so that the wedding band would fit into it, but decided that was silly since I have all these other, lonely, fingers.  I wear my e-ring on my right hand now.  Right after we got married I had a couple of people ask wear my e-ring was, and I guided them to the other hand.  Everyone seems to be coping nicely. > Will they match?  What does he plan to get?

His is the same, a lot bigger.  His is maybe…6mm? 8?  I’m not really sure. It’s kinda cool…my ring fits almost exactly inside his =)  I’m sure there’s some kind of weird symbolism there. > Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?)

The e-ring doesn’t, ’cause I’m way too active for it.  I may start not wearing it daily and just wearing it on special occasions.  I *love* my wedding band all by itself.  *That* fits me perfectly. — While this email address is valid, I don’t check it due to spam.  Please post all replies.

18K yellow gold band, .75 carat princess-cut center diamond, flanked by baguettes to the side (making the ring about a carat, t.w.) > Is it elaborate or simple?

Somewhere in the middle. :) > Did you pick it out or did he?

I told my fiance that I really like the princess cut.  It’s bigger than I expected, but I’m not complaining! :) > If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something > different?  If so, what?

It’s perfect!  I showed him ones I liked and then he made the decision on his own.  I have my grandmother’s engagement ring on my right hand. Although it has a round diamond, it has a square cushion-like setting, and two smaller diamonds on the side, they really complement each other.  I didn’t want a ring that was tall and prong-y, and it sits somewhat low, so I’m very pleased, and not scared of catching it or banging it on something. > What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with > it?  Is it a set? > Will they match?  What does he plan to get?

Ugh.  I have *no idea* what kind of wedding band(s) to get.  I would like to get matching rings, but I envision having a hard time finding rings that will fit next to mine.  I wouldn’t mind a gold-platinum combination. I like the look of two-tone jewelry, and my fiance seems indifferent!  I also wouldn’t mind a ring (sort of an anniversary band style) with channel set baguettes.  We’ll see! > Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?)

Like I said, it’s perfect!  It’s not too plain (and I don’t think I am!), nor is it flashy (definitely not me).  It has "subtle style", I think. :) Jen Jennifer L. Mine is a round brilliant solitare in a 4-prong two tone Tiffany setting. The band is gold and the prongs are white gold.  I love it.  :-) The diamond is a little over a carat, colorless, and has excellent clarity.  Cut and color really makes the stone sparkle. I considered getting a platinum setting, but gold looked better against my skin color. > Is it elaborate or simple?

It’s simple.  That’s what I prefer. > Did you pick it out or did he?

He picked it out.  I was in Vancouver with my parents for 2 weeks. During that time, he we Diamond shopping.  First he started at the mall and then realized he had better do some research on the subject!  He went to one small jewelry store where he had bought me a ring previously (not engagement).  He told them what he was looking for and they had to call their supplier to bring some stones in.  Well, the next day he biked to work – it was also over 100 degrees out.  The jeweler called him and said the stones were in.  She gushed so much about one that he decided to bike over there in the heat after work.  He had to bike 6 miles in over 100 degree heat in 15 minutes (before the store closed). Well, he made it, and decided that was the one.  He had it put in the simplest setting in case I wanted a different one, but I didn’t. > If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something > different?  If so, what?

No, that was exactly what I wanted.  I think he knew beforehand. > What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with > it?  Is it a set?

I don’t plan to get a matching band.  I think I will get a band with like 4-5 small diamonds in a channel setting. > Will they match?  What does he plan to get?

He has no idea.  He’s joking about getting the "sawed off piece of pipe" look. > Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?)

It fits me perfectly. > He is an engineer, so I knew it

I wear my ring all the time: cleaning, cooking, working, etc. I have found the more I would take it off, the chances increase that I will lose it. Besides, it was meant to be worn all the time. Even if it did get dirty, the meaning of wearing it is still the same. My only concern would be if the prongs come loose and I lose the diamond, not if the diamond gets dirty (it’s the hardest substance on earth).

>What does your engagement ring look like?

Hard to describe.  It’s from the ’20s or ’30s, and looks it. The band is yellow gold, with some carving, and the area where the stones are set is raised up & has a lot of filigree work.  The stones (a diamond, flanked by a sapphire on each side) are set in a panel of white gold.  Dainty, exquisite! >Is it elaborate or simple?

It’s not showy or flashy, but once you get a good look at it, all the wonderful details come to view. >Did you pick it out or did he?

I did.  I never wanted an engagement ring, but Chris wanted me to have one. We’d been planning the wedding for several months when, on a dress-fitting trip to Boston, my mother and I came across the above-mentioned ring in a Newbury St. antiques shop.  I’m not into jewelry at all, but something about this ring spoke to me — I had to have it!  I phoned Chris at work in CT, and he obligingly gave me his credit card number! >What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with >it?  Is it a set?

We bought my wedding band a couple of weeks ago.  Again, I found it on a dress-fitting trip to Boston.  And again, I found it in a Newbury St. antiques shop, though not the same one the engagement ring came from.  My band is white gold, etched continuously with a squarish design. It is set with 5 teensy diamonds.  It’s from the ’20s or ’30s and looks wonderful next to my engagment ring. >Will they match?  What does he plan to get?

Chris’ ring will complement mine–it has a carved design around the edges.  He has his heart set on platinum.  We found a ring that he liked, but it came either in gold, or in a gold/platinum combination.  Last week we found a shop that will make the ring in all-platinum!!! >Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?)

My rings definitely fit my personality — I love antiques!  I’m not into jewelry at all, so getting antique jewelry made it more fun!  Chris’ ring is very "him" as well. Becky

I, too, have an antique ring — I’m not sure the time frame on it but I would guess the 30’s. It is has a very thin 14K gold band and a 1/3 carat diamond. What is special about it is the setting — it is called an illusion setting and isn’t made anymore that I know of. The purpose of the illusion setting during the depression was to make the diamonds look bigger than they were. There is a lot of variation regarding the size of the diamond to the setting — i.e. my diamond is nearly as big as the setting but my grandmother basically has a diamond chip in hers in a huge illusion setting. The setting can be crafted in numerous manners — mine looks like a pie-crust and is silver or platinum. From a distance, the ring looks like a large solitaire — the beautiful detail work can only be seen up close. It also sparkles like crazy — the ridged setting that completely surrounds the diamond accentuates the sparkle (the bottom is open, the setting is actually a ring that the diamond is set into). ~Heather (and John 9-25-99)

I take off my wedding ring (and used to take off my engagement ring — need it resized for the other hand, though) for a few tasks. For instance: –Coloring hair, as metal can react badly with some dyes. The little plastic gloves they put in the packages are too small for my hands. –Heavy-duty cleaning, as it’s anyone’s guess what toxic fumes I create trying to get this place clean, and I don’t want to add metal to the mix. I also don’t want it catching on something if I’m climbing or reaching. I even take it off to paint because I get cranky about cleaning paint off things. –Any cooking that involves mixing/kneading with my hands. Flecks of dried bread dough between a wide band and a finger are ANNOYING! Wende

> We both picked it out separately, not knowing we’d picked the same ring!

This just made me grin.  What a lovely co-incidence.  :) Right, as for Kelli’s original questions – > What does your engagement ring look like? > Is it elaborate or simple? > Did you pick it out or did he? > What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with > it?  Is it a set? > Will they match?  What does he plan to get? > Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?)

It’s a asymmetrical gold ring, with what I can only describe as a swoosh of gold surrounding a bezel set sapphire.  (That is, along the top the ring band separates – as if it were about to spiral inward (but not nearly so precise.))  There’s a small diamond set off to one side of the sapphire. I think it the most elaborate thing I’ve ever owned, especially given how light the sapphire is, but compared to other rings I saw in stores, I expect it’s rather simple. I helped pick it out because in order to wear the ring on a semi- regular basis (i.e. to work) I needed something as low set as possible that wouldn’t take to snagging things.  I also did _not_ want a diamond, which is why I always find it amusing that I ended up liking the little accent diamond. It (alone) will be my wedding ring.  His doesn’t match, and is a simple band with a dulling cross-hatch finish.  We’re both a little awkward on the concept of wearing jewelry full time, but I expect it will grow on us.  ;) Shawn’s additional questions > Do you guys wear yours always, or take it off for chores/swimming/other > misc. activities?  And, how does everybody care for and clean their > rings?  I was making dinner the other day and was afraid to get it dirty

My mom actually _lost_ her ring just recently because she took it (a set) off for doing kitchen chores.  (eek!)  I don’t take mine off for simple things like doing the dishes – however were I playing with a turkey or something, I would.  I also take it off for volley ball (though I get teased for this, as they say I’m only doing this to prevent the sunlight glinting off the stone and blinding me. ;) It’s all very silly.  As for cleaning, I do this about once a week, with the solution provided by the store.  Soak, scrub, dry. – Donna

Response:

What does your engagement ring look like? Well, it looks like I’m in a minority here, since the primary stone in  my engagement ring is a sapphire!  I’ve always loved sapphires, and the minute I saw this ring I was enchanted.  Its a marquis cut Persian sapphire, the deepest blue of the evening sky.  On either side there are two half-circles of baguette diamonds, they radiate out from the center of the ring in two layers.  It looks like a celebration of love, or maybe I’m just biased!  I’ve never seen another ring like it, and I adore it. Is it elaborate or simple? I’m probably making it sound more elaborate than it is since its hard to describe, but its not as simple as the simple marquis and band I had wanted originally. Did you pick it out or did he? We looked for rings for quite a while before I saw this one, and then I guess I picked it out because I fell in love with it.  He saw my face, and we left the store he was carrying a little box!  So the proposal wasn’t a surprise, and I was ecstatic. If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something different? If so, what? The perfect ring. What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with it?  Is it a set? No, actually, this ring doesn’t look good even with a plain 2 mm band.  So I am planning on wearing it on my right hand, and my wedding ring on my left.  The wedding ring also has baguette diamonds…picture two ribbons in a eternity symbol criss-cross…one of the ribbons ends in a flat edge just over the top of the other.  Both ribbons are raised in gold, and in their center they have a perfect row of tiny baguette diamonds that catch the light and sparkle.  Its beautiful, though I’m not doing it justice! Will they match?  What does he plan to get? Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?) No, they don’t match, and my mother and aunt were shocked that we weren’t getting a set!  His ring has a raised, flat surface…diamonds start on the left side at the top, continue diagonally across the raised square, and then across the bottom of the right side.  The sides are brushed gold, the flat space is polished.  Its breathtaking, and I was very surprised that he wanted something other than a plain gold band!  He loves the ring too, and though its far more than I’d planned to spend, I think its wonderful, and when I go to make the payments (its on layaway) I smile as I write out the check.   Thanks for starting this thread, its as much fun to write about as to read about! My engagement ring is what the jeweller called "The Bostonian," but I didn’t care what it was called because I loved it!  There are 3 stones – the center one is a .75 ct oval blue sapphire with two .25 ct round diamonds set on either side of it.  The band itself is of white gold with the band tapering in width as it approaches the stones.  The jeweller said that a simple band wouldn’t work with the engagement ring because the ring is larger where the sapphire is and if I were to get a simple band it would rub against the prongs of the engagement ring, ruining both in the process.  So, the band we did get is simple, but different – it was actually designed to hold 3 diamonds in a v-shape (actually it kinda looks like a chevron) in the middle to accomodate the size of the sapphire.  We got it in white gold, didn’t get the diamonds (limited budget!), but had them make the band without them, so it looks just like a chevron with the ridge closest to the engagement ring set a little higher – if you know what I mean.  Anyway, they look beautiful together!  They weren’t meant to be a set, but they do go perfectly together. I picked out the ring – I said "I like that one the best!" and he essentially picked out the wedding band.  Eric picked out a yellow gold band for himself – simple with the beading going all around on either side.  So, our wedding bands don’t match!  However, the rings – because they’re all pretty simple – match our lifestyles and our personalities. I couldn’t believe some of the outrageous rings that were out there! Flashy, we’re not! Thanks for starting a fun thread! Nisa

Simple I suppose. > : Did you pick it out or did he?

We both did. > : What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with > : it?  Is it a set?

GOld band type thing with rose gold celtic knot in the middle. > : Will they match?

They do match although both only just fit on my finger as my wedding ring is quite wide.  I am getting used to it now though (after three months of wearing it). > What does he plan to get?

He had a rose gold band. > : Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?)

Definatly fits my personality – I always like things that are a bit different but not too out rageous (that said since I got my wedding ring I’ve heard of loads of people who have similar wedding rings.)

Response:

Well my ring is quite large sounding but as I have large hands it looks right. I had always wanted a diamond and emerald ring if I were to ever get engaged, so after he proposed we went shopping for rings together. We bought the gems and then had them set. The ring itself consists of an emerald cut emerald rectagular in shape, set longways across the finger and a .25 Ct brilliant cut diamond either side. It cost more than we intended but less than retail as we had it made at a manufacturing jeweller. My wedding band although I wanted plain i would prefer to match David’s and he would like a celtic knotwork band so we are probably getting dull gold bands with a simple pattern on them. I loved this question!  :)  I assume it’s because I love looking at women’s engagement/wedding rings because I think it is an excellent way to get a little glimpse into  personalities and I love to see different styles.  The descriptions of things on this thread so far have been stunning!    Now to answer the questions: I would say that my ring is pretty elaborate.  The center stone is oval in shape, almost 2 carats in size.  My fiance and I had a little trouble finding enough oval stones to compare quality.  The shape is gaining in popularity, so I read, but the good ones go fast, hence the trouble finding more than maybe 1 quality stone per store.  For those of you who think you might want an oval stone, keep looking….they are out there.  We finally bought one that was fresh out of the mine, so to speak, and had just been graded a few days before.  The setting is a 14K yellow gold wide band, with roses, leaves and vines, etc, entwined around it.   There are 7 little diamonds set within the roses that add sparkle all around the band. As you can probably infer, my fiance, Walt and I both picked the stone out and had the setting made, although I described what I wanted in the setting to the jeweler and then stepped out of the process so that part would be a surprise. It was wonderful shopping with Walt, we realy got a since of what working together toward a goal would be like in the future, since it took about 3 months to find the perfect stone. As far as wedding bands, we haven’t really been shopping yet since our wedding is still a year and half away, but we have been looking.  Walt thinks he might want something a little more elaborate than just a plain band, but we will find out when we try rings on.  I think something more than a plain band might take away from my engagement ring or be overkill, but we will see.   I would love to get matching bands. I think that my ring does fit my personality.  I am a lover of history, especially the romantic Victorian-era  ( I hope to include some Victorian elements in our wedding), and my ring is very indicative of that time period. In response to a question someone asked about wearing it all the time, there are times I take it off to protect it, and I’m kind of obsessive about keeping it clean, as I’m sure some of you are, as well.  :)  I have a sonic cleaner as well as a bottle dipping solution that I use almost daily. As a last note, here’s a tip for all of you who are as obsessed with keeping your ring spotless as I am :) – I just found a purse-sized version of the jewelry cleanser that I usually use.  It’s called Connoisseurs Jewelry Cleansing Gel and Brush.  It has a little toothbrush-like brush in a little bottle that can be removed and brushed on and is easily washed off with warm water.  It’s perfect for those times when you are out and wish you could clean your ring…ha ha.  I just got it, but I can certainly see myself popping into a rathroom and taking a couple of minutes to clean it.  It’s perfect for traveling.    I have it in my purse right now.  :) Anyway, congratulations to all of you on your beautiful rings and I look forward to future posts on this thread! Fun thead.. > What does your engagement ring look like?

Okay I have no idea of what the size of any of the stones are :) , but the ring is a oval cut, dark (almost black in some lights) sapphire bezel set with a tiny shoulder diamonds, also bezel set. His is a lovely cetic cut out pattern gold band, it is hard to describe but it looks great on him :) . > Is it elaborate or simple?

Both are simple – very simple.. > Did you pick it out or did he?

I picked it out with his help :) , and he pick his with my help :) . > If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something > different?  If so, what? > What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with > it?  Is it a set?

I’m in two minds about this, getting a wedding band. I don’t like plain gold bands and I have yet to find something I like and that suits me, but if I do get one it will be a touch on the different side. > Will they match?  What does he plan to get?

Nope, his current band will become his wedding band (the fun we had finding one ring he liked, yet alone trying for two :) ), and it doesn’t suit me at all (when looking I tried it on to see). > Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?)

Both for both of us :) .

Coming from somebody who has very little "good" jewelry, I love my ring to death, but it almost scares me to wear it!  For one, I’m a bartender & I just hate when I spill something on it…I guess I’m still in the "ohmygod, I gotta RING!!!" phase! Do you guys wear yours always, or take it off for chores/swimming/other misc. activities?  And, how does everybody care for and clean their rings?  I was making dinner the other day and was afraid to get it dirty :-) Thanks, Joy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > What does your engagement ring look like? > Is it elaborate or simple? > Did you pick it out or did he? > If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something > different?  If so, what? > What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with > it?  Is it a set? > Will they match?  What does he plan to get? > Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?) > I’ll answer first.  My engagement ring is a solitaire, brilliant cut 1 > ct. diamond.  It is in a tiffany setting (very simple).  My husband > picked it out.  It is absolutely perfect!!  I only told him I wanted a > round stone, but he probably would have gotten that for me anyway > because that is what he likes too.  He is an engineer, so I knew it > would be of good quality, but I didn’t expect such a large stone.  I was > shocked when I got it because we were both still in college, so we > didn’t have much money.  Plus, he asked me to marry him much sooner than > I expected too!!  I have a plain 4 mm gold wedding band (comfort fit — > recommended).  The two rings are soldered together (which I highly > recommend).  I am a simple person and don’t like many frills.  I wanted > something of quality, very simple, yet beautiful, which is what I got. > I did not want to detract from my beautiful stone with an elaborate > wedding band, so I knew all along that I wanted a plain band.  He was > going to get something a little more elaborate, but he ended up getting > the exact same ring as me.  I would say that my rings fit my personality > more so than my lifestyle.  I am very active, but my ring is not a > result of that.  His ring probably fits both his personality and > lifestyle because he works on the car a lot.  That is it on our rings. > Kelli

Wow, your ring sounds gorgeous! Mine on the other hand is much smaller (0.5+ carats) total. He did pick it out himself and got a bit bigger than I would have picked out. Now I am having problems at work with my diamond going through my gloves (work in a clinical lab). I do love the ring, and it looks nice on my smaller fingers, but the most special thing is that he drove through 3 states in the dead of winter to get the ring (where he father picked out his mother’s ring). I am the first person in my family to not get an obnoxiously large diamond (which he was worried about) but now everyone else wants to change their setting to something unique.

Response:

: What does your engagement ring look like? White gold, 3/4 carat round diamond, band sort of curves in around the diamond on each side.  The diamond is in a raised setting.   There are 5 tiny little diamonds set into the band to the left of the diamond and 3 marquis cut little sapphires set on one side of the diamond (near my knuckle).  When the wedding band is added there will be 3 more sapphires on the other side of the diamond.  I wish I could describe it better.  This doesn’t do it justice. : Is it elaborate or simple? I guess it is kind of elaborate. : Did you pick it out or did he? We picked it out together.  I felt really strange about spending his money.  I guess I’ll get over that some day. :^) : If he did, is the perfect ring or would you have picked something : different?  If so, what? It is perfect.  I love it.  He teases me because I’m always checking it out in different light.  When I’m driving and the sunlight hits it my attention is immediately refocused and I have to remind myself to watch where I’m going. : What do you plan to get (or have gotten) for you wedding band to go with : it?  Is it a set? It’s a set.  The wedding band fits into the engagement ring.   : Will they match?  What does he plan to get? His ring will most likely not match mine at all.  I don’t know yet what he plans to get but we’ll pick it out together like we did my rings. : Does you ring(s) fit your lifestyle, personality, or both?  (or not?) It does fit my personality but I’m not sure about my lifestyle.  I did worry about wearing it for work for a while but so far I haven’t had any problems.  I can do my telecom-related work and not get things caught on it (or it caught on anything). I’m not a "jewelry person" by any means.  I never wear any.  Frankly, I’ve lost almost every piece of jewelry I’ve ever owned. So, naturally my engagement ring is very simple.  It’s a simple 4 prong solitare setting, princess cut diamond, or modified square, as I’ve heard it called. No side stones, just the rock.  It’s close to a carat. We picked out the ring together.  I thought we were just looking; I almost fell over when we decided to put a deposit on it.  Some people are concerned w/ cut, or carat weight, color, or clarity.  I choose color and clarity to get finicky about.  So it’s a nice sparkly stone. The band is a 2mm white gold band. My wedding band is a plain 2mm white gold band.  His band is wider, white gold, with simple etching aroung the edges. I hope I don’t lose it.  I’ll probably only wear the wedding band after the wedding, and bring out the diamond for special occasions. : ) Lisa M.
