Wedding Present for Fiance

Question:

>I am having a lot of trouble trying to think of something to get my >fiance for a wedding present.  I’d like to spend about $100 and I’d like >it to be somewhat personal.  Any suggestions would be great. >Kristi

I have a pet name for my husband that is the name of a Warner Brothers’ cartoon character. I went to the WB store, and found a paperweight that has that character ontop of it. He can use it on his desk to hold things in place, and be reminded of me whenever he looks at it. He was very pleased when I gave it to him the morning of our wedding. It cost under $100. TJ

Kristi, I must be out of the wedding loop, because until I started reading this newsgroup, I had no idea the engaged couple were "supposed" to buy each other gifts. I figure we’ll get the rings, and that’s that. But the main reason I wanted to reply was to point out that you are best qualified to determine a "somewhat personal" gift for your finance. There have been some fun suggestions, but you know him better than anyone on alt.wedding. If you want to buy him a gift that’s personal, just think about him, his interests, needs, etc. Good luck. This is what we decided, too, for several reasons – like we were paying for the wedding ourselves, we were in the midst of a job-transfer related move to Alabama, we were buying a new house and knew we’d need a lot of new furniture,  I was going to be unemployed for an undetermined period of time, and so on.  So I didn’t buy Jerry a gift and didn’t expect one from him. Then two days before the wedding,  I was trying to decide which of two pairs of earrings I would wear for the wedding.  With one earring of the two pairs on one ear and one earring of the other pair on the other ear, I asked him, "Which do you like better?"  He considered my earlobes for a moment, then opened the drawer of the nightstand and said "I like these the best," as he handed me a jewelry box containing a pair of diamond earrings.  Needless to say, I dissolved into tears – and didn’t wear either of my two pairs of earrings for the wedding! I felt bad that I hadn’t gotten him anything after that, naturally, but he loved surprising me with that gift so much I don’t think he minded at all. I know this story doesn’t help Kristi, but it’s what I think of whenever the subject of bride/groom wedding presents comes up.  Had I gotten Jerry a present, it probably would have been something like a signed first-edition book – either science fiction or military history, because those are two of his major interests. Jason and I are doing the same thing.  Money is tight enough as it is and we decided (together) that we’d rather spend the money on a honeymoon…. works for us. Amy (marrying Jason 3/19/99)

This probably won’t be helpful because it’s so particular to us, but I thought I’d share what I’m getting for Manny anyway. I’d love to hear what other people are planning to get for their fiances. There’s a Chaim Potok book called _Davita’s Harp_, which hasas a running theme through it the door harp that hangs on the door in the protagonist’s house. An Israeli harp company I found online makes door harps exactly like the one described in the book — pear-shaped, with carved and painted designs and rich, low tones. They have one with a Rose of Sharon twining around it, and the Hebrew phrase, "Ani l’dodi v’dodi li," — "I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine," from the Song of Solomon. I’m ordering that for Manny, who loves door harps; the Ani l’dodi phrase is our wedding theme. What about the rest of you?         -Naomi —

Kristi, Well, I got Donny an antique silver pocket watch because I knew he’d always wanted one, and we’re both antique freaks. But, if you want to get something *personal*, then isn’t that something you have to come up with?  Perhaps you should start by thinking about his hobbies, or things you know he really loves, but just wouldn’t spend the money on himself. I got Eric a wedding band <grin> (that would be a *ring*, not a musical group, btw) We decided early on not to get each other gifts for the wedding.  Eric gets pretty stressed about gift buying, so I figured this’d make him happy.  We were already spending a ton of money (for us) on our honeymoon, so it made life a little easier. Obviously not the right solution for everyone, but something to think about. — While this email address is valid, I don’t check it due to spam.  Please post all replies.
