OKAY TO ALTER WEDDING BAND?
Question:
I second this idea… It’s probably simpler just to buy another ring. As for the symbolism of the original, well, you could use the same gold if you felt it was really important. My dad, however, is now on his 3rd wedding ring (after losing the first two). I don’t think it’s jinxed my folks at all — they’ve been together for 26 years. Andrea (& Nathan) 13 September 1997 : You might also discuss with your husband the merits of buying another, : wider ring, especially if the widening of the original is going to : be rather expensive and won’t look as good. It may make the thin : ring =weaker= if you try to widen it; that’s something to discuss with : your jeweler. — — Andrea L. Gadberry Aspiring Librarian
Response:
Do not alter the band. Keep the original musicians together.

Hi Everyone — I have a question: is it okay to widen a thin wedding band? I’ve been married almost 4 years now, and would like to have my 1/8" wedding ring widened to at least a 1/4" or 1/2". Is this considered an acceptable thing to do? Please e-mail to the group, or to my new account at: Lisa J. Iwig

Lisa, I think it’s perfectly acceptable. You’d just be altering a piece of gold – not your relationship! The gold can hold whatever symbolism you care to have it hold for you. Cheryl

Well, I haven’t heard anything socially for or against it. However– what you need to do is talk to about 3 different jewelers and ask a) whether they =can= do it, b) to what length they can do it, and c) how much it’s going to cost you. You might also discuss with your husband the merits of buying another, wider ring, especially if the widening of the original is going to be rather expensive and won’t look as good. It may make the thin ring =weaker= if you try to widen it; that’s something to discuss with your jeweler.

Iwig You can’t really widen the existing band, but you can scrap out the gold and put it into a new band (financially or literally – melting down the actual band and adding gold to make a new one – however, this – actually using existing gold – will be MUCH more expensive). julie

Have you thought about getting another 1/8" wedding band and having it soldered together with another 1/8" band (or maybe in triplicate)? I have seen rings that were specifically designed to look like this. That way you still have the original ring but you can get the width that you need. Maybe the original band in the middle flanked by two new bands… Just a thought. Many people add another diamond band for their 10 year anniversary, why not add a new gold band for year #5 if it suits you? my $.02 ALS
