engagement ring cleaning
Question:
>> How often do you girls get your engagement rings cleaned?
Mine’s a sapphire, and it starts looking dark and dull whenever it has any oil on it, so I’m obsessed – I Windex it pretty much daily and take it into the jeweler whenever I happen to be passing by. And since the wedding is in 125 days, and we haven’t chosen bands yet, I’m trying to make passing by frequent!!

Here is a handing tip. Standard toothpaste is harmless to your ring and will clean quite adequatly so that taking it in for a clean can be less frequent. I was told this by the Jeweller. I use colgate and a child’s toothbrush but hey crest works too. I got mine cleaned about three months after I got it, and it looked so much better — I think the diamond even looks a little bit bigger when it’s perfectly polished. I guess I’m wondering if cleaning it every three months might eventually do harm to the ring. The machines they use at the jewelry stores seem to be pretty harsh. -Cecily http://www.silvershoe.com/wedding/news.html Before you buy.

I get my ring cleaned every 6 months because my jewelry store insures the setting in 6 month increments. So, I take it in and have it checked and cleaned, and they record it on a card I have. It does look a lot better — I just had mine done 2 weeks ago after about a year. It will not harm your ring. The diamond can’t be harmed, and the gold will eventually wear down anyway, so I’m sure they are not doing as much harm as you do to it everyday wearing it. I have an ultra-sonic cleaner that I clean my ring in everyday. I know that may sound excessive, but it is a routine now. I take off my ring to do my hair and put on makeup (so I don’t get hairspray and lotion on it) and put in right into the cleaner. It keeps it cleaner longer, though it doesn’t do near the job they do at the jewelers. The jewelers actually polish the gold ring. I can get the diamond to shine with a toothbrush and some good cleaner, but the gold does get dull after a while no matter what I do. I need to get my husband to take his in to be polished because his is extremely dull with all the work he does. He has never had it polished (for 3 years)!! It doesn’t harm your ring, otherwise the jeweler wouldn’t use the equipment they use. I wouldn’t worry about it.
