Well hey, here’s a surprise. In my copy of the Bride’s magazine wedding planner book it suggests THREE WEEKS salary/6% of "your" salary (it didn’t specify bride or groom) as a good guideline. Also, I reAlly want a platinum setting, but they’re so expensive. If I can’t find a relatively cheap one it will be white gold. Yellow gold looks *terrible* on me. (I’m pretty pale.) Maybe rose gold? And as for the stone, I will either have my mother’s engagement diamond reset, or we’ll go with CZ.

The current convention for engagement rings (diamond solitaire, two months of his salary) is a marketing gimmick begun by the DeBeers diamond concern. DeBeers would *love* it if every wedding generated a sale like that. In earlier times, in Europe/America, the convention was a engagement ring, period. With some interesting stone, often, and usually colored and, usually, not a diamond. White metals were very popular before the diamond solitaire became king. Sad to say, many people would not even recognize platinum for the strong and beautiful metal that it is, so brainwashed we’ve become by the yellow gold + solitaire marketing strategy. Caitlin
