Ages of flower girl/ring bearer
Question:
Hi. I need to find out what are the appropriate ages for a flower girl and ring bearer. I have heard 3-5 and 3-8 for the flower girl. I am not really close to any really young kids to ask them. I do have an eight or nine year old girl cousin and a little boy of the same age who I am close to. I really want a flower girl and ring bearer in our wedding, but are these kids too old? (I do not want to go the route of a junior bridesmaids or junior groomsman). Any help or advice you can give me would be very much appreciated. Please e mail me directly with

One wedding book I had suggested the ages 3-13… but they also mentioned that it depended on the kid. Some 3 yr olds can’t quite hack it, and some 13 might feel embarassed. Personally, I’m trying to stick to keeping my rb and fg between 4-10 years old. (I have a huge family, so finding two kids in the right age group won’t be too hard:) Hope this helps, Lisa

Jennifer: They don’t sound too old to me, but I would think the younger you went, the more behavior problems you may have. I would just be wary of the age for that reason. Karrie (and Michael) November 23, 1996

Jennifer, I will be having my nephew who will be seven in May as ring bearer in my July wedding. Your kids may be old according to the etiquette books…but if you want them, have them!!! At least they’ll be responsible and probably not run to their mommy in the middle of the ceremony… Michele

RE: Ages of ring bearer and flower girl… IMHO, children 4 – 8 qualify to be flower girls and ring bearers. But, let me say it depends on the child. A tall, gangly 8-year old may look too big and unseemly to be a flower girl, or a 4-year old boy may be too immature to carry off the role of ring bearer. It’s up to the bride and groom to use their discretion here. And whatever you do, if you have a child that’s not willing, don’t force them. It will only make them unhappy and miserable when the time comes for them to walk up that aisle. My Flowergirl is my 6 year old neice. And my ring bearer is my 7 year old nephew. We are also having a bible boy who will be my fiancees 3 year old nephew. If you think they will do the job – ask them.

What’s a "Bible Boy"? I’m trying to find a role for some kids in my family and that’s a new one! Melinda

IMHO, and it’s opinion only, not based on any written guidelines I’m aware of, 8 and 9 are pushing it to the limits. In those roles, I just keep seeing 4-6 years old. Still "little" cute but well potty-trained and *maybe* more able/apt to follow instructions than 3. Hmmmm, where is your wedding, Jennifer? Our flower girl lives in Richmond, VA and has "previous flower girl experience on her r

My flower girl is my 9 year old niece and the ring bearer is my fiance’s 4 year old cousin. In my mind it does not matter the ages and really, who cares what anyone else thinks? This is YOUR day, so you do what you want. I liked the idea of my niece being older since the ring bearer is so young. She’ll be able to help him down the aisle. But again, this is your day and you should do whatever makes you happy!!
